Cyprus and Egypt start gas export pipeline negotiations

Cyprus has kickstarted negotiations to export natural gas via a submarine pipeline to its energy-deficient neighbour, Egypt. The project will involve “the transport of natural gas via a direct subsea pipeline from the exclusive economic zone of the Republic of Cyprus to a landing point in the exclusive economic zone or onshore the Arab Republic of Egypt, either for domestic consumption or re-export,” according to a joint statement by Cyprus and Egypt.

The two governments will now proceed with discussions on an intergovernmental agreement for the pipeline. The aim is to have the pipeline operational by 2020-2022.
