US-based budget airline Allegiant Air has placed an order for 12 new Airbus A320s - its first order for new aircraft. Allegiant will take delivery of the aircraft from the spring of 2017 to mid-year 2018.

The budget airline, which is gradually phasing in an Airbus-only fleet, normally buys used aircraft, but was able to reach a deal with Airbus because the manufacturer intends to phase out production of the model with its current engine options. By the end of 2016, Allegiant's in service Airbus fleet will number 33, consisting of 16 A320s and 17 A319s.
