Americas: the established North and the dynamic South

The Americas awards provide an insight into this dynamic and changing market, giving some idea on how the national banks are moving forward, and how western institutions are stepping up to provide support across their global footprint.

It is a continent full of intriguing developments and success stories.

Latin America is a region with very strong local banks, and this is reflected in the results from the country categories as Banco Itau was named Best Trade Bank in Brazil, while Banco Colombia took the title for Best Trade Bank in Colombia.

Meanwhile the Best Trade Bank in Peru prize went to Banco de Credito and the Best Trade Bank in Panama was taken by Banco General.

Despite that, international banks also have a strong regional presence. Santander has shown itself to be the global bank with the biggest foothold across the Americas, thanks to its presence in the Latin American countries. Coming top in the categories of Best Trade Bank in Chile, Best Trade Bank in Mexico, the bank also took highly commended positions in the Best Trade Bank in Argentina and Best Trade Bank in Peru categories.

In addition, Santander put on a forceful performance in the specialist categories, picking up the prizes for the Best Trade Advisor in Latin America, Best Supply Chain Finance Bank in Latin America, Best Commodity Finance Bank in Latin America, and Best Export Finance Arranger in Latin America. Unsurprisingly, the bank has scooped the title of Best Overall Trade Bank in Latin America.

By contrast, North America is a very different market, with the established global names taking the top spaces in a very competitive landscape. Citi was named the Best Trade Advisor in North America, while Bank of American Merrill Lynch won the Best Trade Bank in the USA. North of the border, BMO saw success as the Best Trade Bank in Canada, as well as winning the prize for Best Supply Chain Finance Bank in North America.

But European banks are no slouches in the region, with Societe Generale winning the prize for Best Commodity Finance Bank in North America and HSBC again taking the Best Export Finance Arranger award, seeing off competition from Citi.

In the agency category the undeniable strength and skill of the local offering left no room for international players to make their presence felt. US Ex-Im’s unrelenting drive to support the growth of the US economy through job creation has helped it achieve the coveted prize of Best ECA Americas.

In the coming years, it will be interesting to see just how much progress European institutions can make in the Americas and weather the US Congress’ ongoing review of US Ex-Im’s charter might finally create the conditions for it to be unsettled from its reign as Best ECA Americas.
